Rochelle’s Special Education Tips
Updating the IEP
When you hold an annual review, do not skip pages in the IEP. For instance, the Parental Input section should be different from year to year. It may be the same message, but at least change the wording.
The Present Levels should address the current Present Levels, not what happened two years ago, unless you are making a specific comparison in the Present Levels to the student’s prior functioning. But do not repeat what was in the IEP. You can look at the old IEPs for that purpose.
Make sure the IEP is capturing the services you are providing. For instance, if the student requires constant adult support, write that into the Supplemental Aids.
Write the IEP so it is understandable by the parent. You can use educationalese, but provide a layperson’s explanation to go along with the educationalese.
