Maryland Legislation Update

The following is a list of new legislation that may impact those interested in liability issues and insurance practices.

Special Causes of Action
Statutes of Limitations Child Sexual Abuse
The Maryland General Assembly enacted House Bill 642 which alters the statute of limitations and institutes a statute of repose for claims involving sexual abuse. Such claims must be filed within the later of 20 years after the date on which the victim reaches the age of majority or 3 years after the date that the defendant is convicted of a crime relating to the alleged incident or incidents, as specified.

PK Law One of Highest Number of Female Partners Of Baltimore Area Firms

The Maryland Daily Record recently published an article looking at the diversity efforts and progress of Maryland firms.  While the progress is slow, the article does recognize a number of efforts made by firms to change their diversity landscape.

Identified prominently in the article is PK Law’s progress as a firm having one of the highest number of female partners.  PK Attorney/Member was quoted with respect to the efforts made by the firm to obtain this number, “Everybody is really looking out for each other’s success. Maryland’s Efforts To Protect Against Animal Cruelty 

Next month’s issue will focus on our canine companions and Maryland’s strident efforts to increase protections against animal cruelty with the passing of several new laws that will go into effect on October 1, 2017.  Specifically, Maryland has clarified conduct constituting animal abuse and neglect, provided compensation for shelters taking in dogs from cruelty cases and increased standards for shelters and pet stores.  We will also discuss Maryland’s efforts at establishing an animal abuse registry and ways to include you furry best friend in your will.
